In this type of conference students report his / her own academic progress to parents through the use of a portfolio. One goal of the student-led conference is to encourage students to take responsibility for his/her own learning. In addition, students learn new skills and gain a sense of pride and accomplishment from student-led conferences.
Teachers will contact parents through letters and / or phone calls to schedule a conference time. Each student will lead the conference by following a format that is developmentally appropriate. The student will share a portfolio of their work, share a self evaluation of progress and share goals for the year. At the follow-up conference in the spring, progress towards academic growth and goal attainment is also a part of the format.
